Here on Bank Street, there are tons of places to help you, your friends, and your whole family get ready, not only for Canada’s 151st birthday but also to beat the heat, no matter what your interest are and plans are for July 1st.

Let’s start with the basics. Everyone knows that you can’t truly celebrate Canada Day unless you are decked out in red and white, and maple-leaf-everything. Located at
297 Bank Street is a store that has it all, at a very reasonable price - Dollar It! Dollar It has all our Canada Day needs, from sunglasses to temporary tats, umbrella hats to water bottles (to help you bare the heat)! I definitely recommend a quick pit stop at Dollar It today or tomorrow as they are open on Canada Day if you forget anything!

 

 

 

Stay Cool

Another thing to consider, especially since they’re saying that Canada Day this year is going to be record-breaking hot, is to stay hydrated and protected from the sun. Make sure to drink LOTS of water! If you have a reusable water bottle, the City of Ottawa has made sure to have several refill stations downtown near Parliament, just down Bank Street and on Wellington Street. But when it comes staying protected from the sun, remember to rock your white and red Canada Day shirt and NOT your black and red one, use an umbrella to get out of the sun, and invest in some sun-protectant that keeps you feeling cool!

On a walk today down Bank, I stopped at Planet Botanix on 301 Bank Street, and learned about these 3 really cool products. A Walk In The Woods (left) is an all-natural bug repellant that works on both humans and pets, the Instant Karma Spritzer (right) helps to refresh, cleanse and purify the environment, and most importantly, Sol (centre), is another all natural light sun repellant that feels cool, refreshing and not sticky! All of these products are made from essential oils and are good for, if not all, then most skin types (and they’re only about $15 each!). So if you in and around Bank Street today or on Canada Day, I definitely recommend stopping in at Planet Botanix too, also open on Sunday! (Also, the whole store smells amazing!)

I also stopped in today and spoke to some of the experts at Healthy Pets HQ (420 Bank Street). I asked them about what pet owners should do if they want to bring their dog out to Ottawa’s Canada Day festivities in this heat. They recommend this product, the Ice Vest, that can help to keep your dog cool! They also have a ton more products for weather like this. We can’t forget about keeping our pups cool too!

There are also a number of other fun products that you can pick up in preparation of Canada Day! Polaroid Originals™ are sold at both Henry's (267 Bank Street) and Staples (403 Bank Street) and definitely a summer 2018 must-have, especially just in time for Canada Day! These vintage style polaroid cameras are priced at around only $130 and can really help capture all of your favourite summer moments!

There’s also a lot of cool tech available at Staples such as portable speakers and phone chargers! So be sure to check it out!

Hungry?

Okay, now let’s talk about what’s really important: Food! If your going to be downtown on Canada Day why not take a walk down one of Ottawa’s best and growing areas, Bank Street and grab some snacks to go or sit down and enjoy a nice meal with your fellow Canadians! From bakeraries to bars, Bank Street has you covered! Pick up a casual lunch and a cold drink at Gabriel's Pizza, or head down the James Street Pub for a misty patio to cool down!

There are also bakeries and smoothie bars all up and down Bank Street that you can top by that are operating in their regular hours! Shops like the Golden Baguette Bakery (242 Bank Street) and Magic Molecule (217 Bank Street) are a great place to stop for a snack, cool down and grab some cool drinks!

Last but not least, there is an ADORABLE little ice cream shop located a bit further down Bank Street that make all its unique ice cream flavours in-house and has even come up with 4 Canada Day themed flavours which were released today! The shop is called Moo Shu Ice Cream & Kitchen and is located at 477 Bank Street, Their ice cream is AMAZING and is a great way to cool down in this hot summer heat!

EVENTS ASSISTANT
BANK STREET BIA

 

The Summer Events Assistant(s) will assist in the organization of the 2018 Bank Street BIA summer events and promotions.

Position Type: Summer Contract
Duration: 8 Weeks – May 7 2018 – June 29 2018
Number of positions: 2

Hours of Work: 30 hours/week
Some evening and weekend work will be required.

The successful applicant must be available for the weekend of June 14 – June 16

Rate of Pay $15 per hour

Duties and Responsibilities

·       Be on hand to support the Assistant Director

·       Assist in the coordination of partnership details leading up to the festival

·       Manage data related to vendor relationships and other partnerships

·       Respond to events enquiries (by phone, email)

·       Assist with communications to events participants, supporters and suppliers

·       Record and report on the success of promotional activity

·       Coordinate the supply of events merchandise

·       Compile feedback from event participants

·       Assist with social media and website content development

Time Commitment

·       Attendance at a pre-event planning meetings, in the weeks leading up to the event

·       Attendance at the event, the day of, and possibly the night prior and/or day following, depending on set-up and take-down requirements

·       Participation in the post-event debrief, typically scheduled to take place within one month following the event

Requirements

·       Excellent customer service skills

·       Excellent communication and listening skills

·       Ability to work as a team member towards a common goal

·       Ability to follow direction and work independently in keeping with the direction given

·       Enthusiasm for event facilitation

 

Experience and Skills Required

·       This position requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, creative thinking and a passion for events and creating a high-quality guest experience.

·       Office work includes but is not limited to answering and returning phone calls, follow-up with inquiries, computer data entry, and assistance with correspondence and event files.

·       To be successful in this position, an individual should be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requested experience listed below is representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability needed to be successful in this position.

·       Current undergraduate or college student in hospitality, marketing, communications or business degree with strong interest in special events, non-profit organizations, and the arts is ideal.

·       Candidate must demonstrate strong communication skills.

·       Must be able to speak effectively before groups and interact constructively and well with others.

·       Knowledge of broad themes in event production and management is required.

·       Self-motivation, initiative and reliability are essential.

·       Basic office skills, record keeping, and organization skills are required.

·       Candidate must be able to handle information of a sensitive matter, such as confidential sponsor and artist information and records.

 

Physical Demands

·       The Events Assistant(s) will often lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and be must able to stand for long periods of time.

·       A valid driver’s license and willingness to drive a personal vehicle during the festival is an asset but not required

Work Environment

·       The Events Assistant(s) will be based primarily at the Bank Street BIA office located at 176 Gloucester Street, with travel to various venues. Assignments may be indoors or outdoors. Weekends and some evenings will be required. There will be the option to work remotely on occasion.

 

Eligibility 

It is expected that this position will be supported by the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the Ontario Summer Experience Program. As such, applicants must meet the following requirements:  

·       Have been registered as full-time students in the current academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in September 2018;

·       Be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment;

·       Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or persons who have been granted refugee status in Canada;

·       Be legally entitled to work according to provincial legislation and possess a valid Social Insurance Number; and

·       Not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits at the start of the job.

Take a photo with daffodil pin on Bank Street (between Wellington - Catherine) and post using #DaffodilsOnBank and #DaffofilMonth. The contest open between April 4 and April 30 2018Winner will be selected at random!

Daffodil Month launch with the Canadian Cancer Society on Downtown Bank Street!

For 80 years, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has been Canada’s cancer voice and leading authority on the disease. They are the only organization that fights all types of cancer, supports and advocates for patients and their families, and champions those who care about a future where no Canadian fears cancer.

Daffodil Month, held every April, is their national fundraising campaign. Thousands of CCS volunteers and staff will be working across Canada to raise vital funds for cancer research and programs that support patients. In partnership with Downtown Bank Street, the Canadian Cancer Society will kick off Daffodil Month with a yellow party at Eggepectations (171 Bank Street)! 

 

This event is open to the public! Please join us:

Artists will be on site painting the Eggspectation windows yellow in anticipation of the Bank Street window painting contest that will happen throughout April

Job Brief

The person for the job is a competent Assistant Director to support the Executive Director in the operations of the BIA.

Assistant directors are well-versed in performance and operations management and competent in assuming delegated duties. They are leaders and critical thinkers, ready to solve problems before they become obstacles.

The goal is to help the BIA attain its objectives of representing, advocating and elevating Downtown Bank Street as the destination to live, work, shop etc. to residents and visitors.

Responsibilities

Special Events/Sponsorship/Grants

  • Assist in developing and implementing plans and goals for events and projects

  • Experience in organizing outdoor events

  • Experience with Municipal SEAT team

  • Work with the Executive Director and Communications Director to coordinate and supervise special events and sponsorship designed to raise the profile of the Bank Street BIA in its role to promote the area as a destination both to residents and visitors

  • Excellent people skills to raise sponsorship funds in support of special events and activities

  • Seek out grant opportunities to further enhance the profile of Downtown Bank Street

  • Support grant writer in developing application and confirming accuracy of application

  • Assist in budgeting and monitoring expenses

  • Maintain scheduling of events and represent the company when needed

  • Strong media connections in raising profile of BIA led initiatives

  • Engagement with local businesses in development of special events

  • Take leadership role on event days

Marketing

  • A good understanding of the retail market

  • Understanding analytics in designing comprehensive programming for the Bank Street area

  • Assist with marketing and promotional campaigns

  • Work with Communications Director in providing necessary information for messaging through all communication platforms

  • Strong collaborative team player

Administration

  • Ensure compliance with regulations and internal policies

  • Create reports and submit them to the Executive Director or other executives

  • Fulfill duties as assigned by the Executive Director

  • Working with the Executive Director and office team in meeting the goals and directions of the Bank Street BIA Strategic Plan

  • Assist in the daily administration of the BIA office

  • Understanding and ensuring compliance with regulations and internal policies required by the BIA

  • Attend meetings including Board, sub-committees, community leaders, members, sponsors and other potential stakeholders/collaborators

  • Working with BIA team in the understanding of municipal issues related to the operations of the BIA, special events and granting opportunities

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in special events and management of large outdoor events

  • Successful experience in attaining sponsorships

  • Proactive in the execution of tasks

  • Excellent staff management skills

  • Proven experience as assistant director or other similar position
