Brown Bag Lunch: The Opposite of School

  • IMPACT HUB Ottawa

Is Canada ready for a Nordic invention?

What do Rosa Parks, Banff Centre for Arts, and millions of Scandinavian students have in common? They are all connected to an alternative community college model called a Folk High School, a residential year-long college that often focuses on personal or professional development without requiring grades, exams or even tuition. Over three hundred folk high schools have emerged across Scandinavia since beginning 150 years ago and there have even been attempts to start them in Canada too!

If you have an interest in youth, training, education, community engagement, activism, and gap years, this presentation is for you! Come learn about what folk high schools are all about, their potential in Canada and how we can make it happen together.

Presented by Nico Koenig, an adult education and community development consultant currently based in Ottawa. Find out more about his work at nicokoenig.com

*Special* Wine Down with Vivian Sollows at IMPACT HUB Ottawa

  • IMPACT HUB Ottawa

Vivian Sollows who is a singer/songwriter will be offering for the first time a program she created specifically designed for entrepreneurs to relax, called Switching Gears. The music circle will start off with relaxing, soft music with breathing exercises, chair exercise, tension release by shaking out body, making silly sounds and vocal exercises to warm up, then to lead songs to sing together. We’ll experiment with familiar songs – you can send your requests to [email protected]. If you’re nervous about singing, don’t forget: it’s a bring-your-own-wine event.

Vivian is part of this year’s Impact Academy cohort and her goal is to create an NPO around accessibility. Vivian has been developing Adaptive Music Expressions  so everyone can make music, no matter their disability, age, or musical ability. Inclusion, dignity, equal opportunity and independence is what truly being accessible embraces.
