Mural from Bank Street BIA on Vimeo.
While plans to renovate Somerset House are churning at City Hall, the Bank Street BIA decided to do commission a mural to spruce up the area.
Dan Metcalfe and Pat Buck completed the mural in November. It took three days to complete. The mural will remain by Somerset House until its reconstruction is complete.
Metcalfe’s and Buck’s work is all over town, including at the Glebe Meat Market, Miss Tiggy Winkles and Octopus Books in the Glebe. Both artists honed their craft at school. Buck went to Algonquin College for graphic design. Metcalfe attended the Nova Scotia College for Arts and Design.
Buck explains that public art work is not only a great way to liven up an area, but it’s also a great way to combat graffiti.
“It was a really fun project and we’d like to do a lot more,” says Buck. “It’s just finding the space and business owners.. that actually want to do serious work on their properties. [It's also] a great way to fight against graffiti. It generally gets left alone.”
If you have an idea where another mural might work, let us know on Facebook, Twitter or send us an email. We’d love to hear from you.
